How to Keep Your Band Instrument in Great Shape

Cleaning a trumpet

A well-cared-for instrument sounds better, plays easier, and lasts longer. Most repairs we see in our shop could have been prevented with a few simple habits.

Wipe it down after every use. Oils from your hands can damage the finish over time. Use a soft cloth to wipe the instrument before putting it away.

Keep it in the case. Instruments left on chairs or beds are easy to knock over or sit on. When you’re not playing, put your instrument back in its case.

Clean it regularly. Brass players should give their instrument a bath about once a month. Woodwind players should swab out moisture after every practice.

Watch the temperature. Never leave an instrument in a hot car. Texas heat can crack wood, melt glue, and damage pads.

The video above walks through a basic cleaning step by step. If your instrument needs more than a cleaning, bring it by our repair shop for a free estimate.
