Buying your first guitar is exciting, but walking into a store full of options can feel overwhelming. Here are five tips from our crew to help you pick the right one.
1. Decide between acoustic and electric. Acoustic guitars are great for strumming songs and don’t need an amp. Electric guitars have lighter strings that are easier to press down, which some beginners prefer.
2. Pick the right size. Younger players often feel more comfortable with a 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar. If your arm has to stretch to reach the first fret, the guitar is too big.
3. Check the playability. A good beginner guitar should have strings that sit close to the neck. High strings are hard to press and can make learning painful.
4. Set a budget, but don’t go too cheap. Very low-priced guitars often don’t stay in tune, which is frustrating for new players. A solid beginner guitar is worth the investment.
5. Play before you buy. Come into the store and hold a few guitars. The right one will feel comfortable in your hands.
